KS2 MiTuition Maths
Dr Sally Dormer
Anne-Marie has tutored our son William (aged 9 and a pupil at Lyndhurst House Preparatory School, Hampstead), for an hour-long maths session, once a week, for the past year. It is no exaggeration to say that she has transformed our lives! Prior to her arrival William struggled with numbers and hated maths. He received some extra help at school, but both he, and I, dreaded maths homework nights. His Year 3 class teacher recommended that we engage a tutor. At first William was extremely resistant to the idea, but his attitude changed after his very first session with Anne-Marie. Her friendly manner put him at ease, and her excellent teaching skills, coupled with her obvious expertise in maths, engaged him quickly. She has transformed his attitude to maths, and continues to build his confidence in tackling the subject. She has armed him with strategies to deal with the mathematical concepts he needs to use. He feels able to tell her when he fails to understand something and she patiently explains again, for as many times as he needs to grasp a concept properly. When he is tired or distracted she skilfully coaxes him through the session with humour, achieving the targets she has set.
A year on, William’s Year 4 class teacher has commented on his increased confidence and ability to tackle maths problems independently, and he and I no longer clash over maths homework. William will never be a specialist mathematician (his natural ability lies in the realm of the written word and the visual arts), but thanks to Anne Marie he has lost his fear of numbers and become competent at maths. He never refers to having maths tutoring, but asks when Anne-Marie is coming.
From a parent’s perspective I have been delighted to get to know Anne-Marie and found her to be consistently committed to her work and efficient at communicating with me. I recommend her unreservedly. She is a brilliant maths tutor!
